Panchmel Dal
Panchmel Dal is the smooth and spicy blend of 5 different dals. This is the unique but very tasty dal that can be served with rice or Indian chapatis / roti. Learn how to make Panchmel Dal.


Preparation time: 8-10 minutes
Cooking time: 25-35 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup  split green gram lentil (moong ki dhuli dal)
  • 1 cup masoor dal
  • 1 cup arhar dal
  • 1 cup urad ki dhuli dal
  • 1 cup horse beans (chane ki dal)
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1-1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 3-4 green chillies finely chopped
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli power
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil / ghee
  • Handful coriander leaves finely chopped

How to make Panchmel Dal:

  1. Wash all the lentils very well in water and mix them in a big bowl.
  2. Soak them in a good amount of water for about an hour.
  3. Boil the soaked dal with salt until turns soft.
  4. Heat a pan and add oil.
  5. When the oil is hot enough then add cumin seeds.
  6. Allow the seeds to crackle and now add asafoetida.
  7. Mix the boiled dal and add salt with remaining ingredients.
  8. Cook on medium high flame for 5-6 minutes.
  9. Finally garnish dal with good amount of chopped coriander leaves.
  10. Serve hot with rice or roti / chapati.
